About Chauntel M. Summers, PhD, LCMHC

Qualifications
I have been working in the counseling and behavioral health field since 1998 and have been in private practice since 2009. I received my PhD in Counseling Psychology from Capella University in Minneapolis in 2007. I hold a BS in English/Writing (1994) and an MA in Community Counseling/Addiction (2000) from Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania. I am licensed as a Clinical Mental Health Counselor in North Carolina (#7412) am a Board Certified Tele-Mental Health provider (BC-TMH #1303). I was the first Certified First Responder Counselor in North Carolina and have a post-graduate certification in Mental Health Counseling for Athletes and can provide supportive services to athletes and teams of all ages. Additionally, I am certified as a Life Coach and provide motivational coaching services to adults for a variety of purposes. I have also done specialized training to work with immigrant populations on their specific assessment needs.
Counseling Background
I have worked in a variety of mental health positions including inpatient drug and alcohol rehabilitation, behavioral consulting, intensive community-based therapy, and individual and group counseling environments. As a clinician, I provide outpatient and tele-mental health services to clients ages 12 and older with behavioral and emotional concerns related to depression, anxiety, PTSD, ADHD, chronic pain/health issues, and severe mental illness. I have worked primarily with military connected clients (service members, veterans and dependents) for the past 14 years and am trained and certified to meet the specific needs of the first responder community, medical personnel, and top-level athletes. While I have worked in substance abuse treatment facilities, I do not currently focus on treating clients with drug and alcohol abuse as a primary complaint.
Knowledge to Share
I understand many aspects of the counseling profession other clinicians may not, such as insurance codes, credentialing, and billing, working with outside entities like schools and community organizations, and the pros and cons of working in various clinical settings. I understand many theoretical orientations and can share with you what environments and/or clients benefit from using a particular approach.
Confidentiality
As you are already aware, confidentiality is key in our profession and will be an inherent part of the supervision experience. I will provide you with any necessary documentation required for your clients and the facilities with which you are working to ensure them of the confidentiality of their information. However, the limits of confidentiality regarding "duty to warn" and legal responsibility will be upheld.
